Every page of Noah’s book
The same face from the first page to the last, painted in one style. These are the pages exactly as they came out.
Before their forest walk, four-year-old Noah filled both pockets with pale pebbles from the yard. His sister waited by the gate. “Little moons,” he said, choosing one more smooth stone. Deep in the forest, Noah and his sister could not find the way home. Noah dropped shiny pebbles behind them. “We have little moons to follow,” he whispered, though the trees looked very tall. Noah found a cottage made of gingerbread and sugar, sparkling between the trees. A stranger hurried to its door. “Come eat, eat, eat!” she called, much too eagerly for Noah’s liking. The stranger piled cakes across the table, but Noah watched the door. “We’ll leave in the morning,” he said. “You’ll do no such thing!” she snapped, turning the key in the lock. Noah woke to find his sister shut inside a wicker cage. His heart thumped, but he kept his face calm. He put one finger to his lips: he had spotted the stranger’s trick. “Show me how to climb in,” Noah said, pointing into the big cold oven. When the stranger crawled inside, Noah shut and latched its heavy door. He freed his sister, who brought pearls she’d found beside her cage. Noah tucked the pearls into his pockets and followed the shiny pebbles by moonlight. His sister walked beside him. At last, their own window glowed with a lamp, warm as a welcome. Home by morning, Noah poured the pearls from his pockets onto the kitchen table. His family traded them for food and seeds. Their cupboard was never bare again, and their garden grew sweet peas.
