Luna’s mother held out a basket of cake for Grandmother. Luna wore her bright red cloak. “Keep to the path,” Mother said, “and do not stop to talk to anyone.” Luna set off along the forest path, her basket swinging gently on one arm. Her red cloak shone bright among the trees. Nearby, a woodcutter whistled as he gathered fallen sticks. A grey wolf stepped out between the trees. “Where are you going?” he asked Luna in a friendly voice. “To Grandmother’s cottage,” Luna answered, forgetting Mother’s warning for a moment. The wolf pointed away from the path, toward a bank of flowers. “Grandmother would love a bunch,” he said sweetly. Luna turned to look at the little blossoms glowing in the grass. Luna picked a small bunch, then stood up among the flowers. Meanwhile, the wolf took the short way through the trees and reached Grandmother’s cottage first. His sneaky plan was hurrying ahead. At the cottage, Luna asked, “What big ears, what big eyes—and what big teeth you have!” The wolf flung off the nightcap. It was the wolf all along! Luna turned toward the open door, where help waited. “Away you go!” called the woodcutter, and the wolf ran out of the woods for good. Luna pointed after him. Grandmother stepped safely from her cottage; she had been resting in the pantry. Luna, Grandmother, and the woodcutter shared the cake at Grandmother’s table. The wildflowers stood in a little jug. “Next time, I’ll keep to the path,” Luna said, and everyone smiled.
