The same face from the first page to the last, painted in one style. These are the pages exactly as they came out.
At the forest edge, six-year-old Theo listened to an old woman. “At a christening, twelve fairies brought gifts. One fairy was left off the list, and her spell made the palace sleep a hundred years.” Theo gazed across the meadow. For a hundred years, briars had climbed over the palace gates and walls. Only the tower tops showed, like little hats above a leafy sea. Theo reached the thorns and raised one careful hand. The briars were so thick that not even a bird could get through. “There must be a gentle way,” he whispered. Theo spotted a narrow gap where the briars curved apart. He tucked in his arms and stepped sideways through. Not one rose lost a petal, and the palace gate waited beyond. Theo tiptoed into the kitchen. Cooks, cats, guards, and everyone else had slept for a hundred years. A spoon rested in soup; a cat dreamed beside a slipper. “Goodness,” Theo whispered. Theo found the princess asleep on a canopied bed. A hundred years of roses crowded the round room’s window. He stayed a pace away, wondering what kind word could reach her dreams. A fairy appeared beside the bed. “You were forgotten, and that was unkind,” Theo said. “You are welcome here.” The fairy smiled, her spell dissolved, and the princess opened her eyes. Theo cheered as the whole palace stretched and yawned. Cooks stirred, cats purred, and guards grinned. Then music rang out for the longest-awaited party in the kingdom, with a place for every fairy.
