Every page of Mateo’s book
The same face from the first page to the last, painted in one style. These are the pages exactly as they came out.
Five-year-old Mateo brought straw to help the first pig build his first home. In one afternoon, the pig piled it up and sat down proudly. Mateo frowned at the wobbly walls. Mateo helped the second pig gather sticks for his first house. The pig rushed the walls up, then hurried off to play. Mateo steadied a stick; even the roof was crooked! Mateo and the third pig took their time. They spread mortar, laid bricks, and checked each row. 'Slow and steady,' said Mateo. Their first house grew strong, one careful brick at a time. A hungry wolf came sniffing down the lane. Mateo watched from the brick wall as all three pigs went very quiet. 'Stay close to our strong house,' Mateo whispered. 'I'll huff, and I'll puff!' growled the wolf. Whoosh! The straw house flew apart into the air. Mateo and the first pig ran toward the brick house, well ahead of the wolf. The wolf huffed again, and the stick house flew apart with a clatter. Mateo called, 'This way!' Both pigs raced beside him toward the brick house, where the third pig waited. Mateo and all three pigs crowded into the brick house. Mateo slid the bolt across the stout wooden door. Outside, a shadow passed the window. Inside, four friends breathed a little easier. The wolf puffed until he had no breath left, then walked away for good. Mateo showed all three pigs how to lay bricks and mortar. 'Strong homes take time,' he said.
